Young Adults Finally Enjoying Health Insurance

For many in this country, health insurance has always seemed like a privilege -or at least to those who know what's it's like to go for long periods of time without it. Health insurance certainly isn't something that I take for granted since I went over three years without any after college. But this is a common story for many people just out of college since you lose your parents' insurance coverage right after graduation. However, thanks to new healthcare laws passed by President Obama, three recent studies have shown an increase in health insurance coverage for those under the age of 26.

One such study showed that there were 900,000 fewer uninsured adults in the 19-25 age bracket in the first quarter of 2011 than in 2010. That's quite a difference in numbers, especially during a time of economic downturn. The recession left nearly double the amount of unemployed young adults versus older Americans, as well as a significant decrease in the average income. Despite my generation's gain, every other generation saw a large dip thanks to high unemployment rates.

Regardless of whether people are for or against the new healthcare bill, analysts can't come up with any other explanation for the surge other than the recently passed law. There have been no studies yet though on the impact of cost. Those in the health industry are crediting the healthcare bill to the rise in enrollment and premium costs. A spokesman from America's Health Insurance Plans stated that due to simple economics, prices go up when more benefits and people are added to insurance policies.

The dependent coverage has seen much opposition from the Republican party, but it's hard to actually find someone under the age of 26 who is actually complaining about the policy. For many, it's a huge relief -especially now that it is so difficult to find a job. For those with preexisting medical conditions it gives even more peace of mind because they don't have to worry about how they will pay for medications and monthly doctor visits. Even young adults lucky enough to find an entry level job, health insurance is often not offered and because of this, the rate of young adults uninsured is double the national average.

Health insurance coverage no longer has to feel like a benefit for young adults. It doesn't even have to be something they have to think about or worry about. It can finally give them peace of mind while they try to step out into the working world and make a name for themselves.
